A two-day break
For a short stay in Montpellier start off at the Place de la Comedie, a huge oval peppered with cafes and watched over by the Three Graces. Relax in one of the oldest Botanical Gardens in Europe, which served as a model for similar gardens in France. Visit the stunning Fabre Museum or perhaps one of Monpellier’s many contemporary art galleries. Why not take a guided tour around the oldest operating medical school in the West, housed in a medieval monastery.

A family holiday
Montpellier is packed with things to do for the whole family. Visit Montpellier Zoo, with more than 320 different animals and an Amazonian greenhouse. The Mare Nostrum, a brand-new aquarium, will certainly provide a fun-filled day. Then there’s the Odyssium, a huge urban complex of shops, restaurants and fun-filled activities including ice-skating and the Galileo Planetarium. Don’t forget the beautiful beaches that Montpellier is so famous for – easily reached by tourist train or bike.

Transports
The Montpellier – Méditerranée Airport is only 8km from the downtown centre of the city. Montpellier is also served by the TGV which comes into Saint-Roch station and the A9 and A75 motorways. Get around the city by tram, bus or by hiring a bike through the Velomagg scheme.

Gastronomy
From hearty French Cassoulet to beautifully flavoured Spanish paella, the range of dishes to be found in Montpellier is mouthwatering. Choose from traditional, Michelin-starred or world cuisine; there is truly something for everyone’s palette. Events
Each year in July a festival of opera and music takes place in Montpellier. The Festival de Radio France et Montpellier hosts around 150 events including talks, films, opera and concerts all based around classical and jazz music. Many of the events are free and take place in the city’s historic courtyards.

Interesting fact
Montpellier has a history of violin-making. Luthiers – violin-makers - have been making these instruments and distributing them around the world since 1768. The craft died down at the beginning of the 20th century but has seen a revival since the 1980s. Although their shops and workshops are hidden away, there are 9 active luthiers in the city today and tours of their premises can be booked through the Tourist Office.
