Nice, France'sfifth most populated city is located on the south east coast on the Mediterranean Sea. Like many of its neighbouring cities, Nice is part of the French Riviera and is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department, an area known for its mountainous surroundings. Often referred to as 'Nice la Belle', meaning 'Nice the beautiful' stunning views and warm weather make this city a great holiday destination. Rich in history, Nice is thought to be home to one of the earliest settlements in Europe. Founded by the Greek population of Marseille around 350 BC, it was named 'Nikaia' after 'Nike' the Greek Goddess of victory to coincide with their own victorious gain. Transports
By plane travel to Nice through Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, considered to be the third busiest airport in France. An express airport shuttle is also available for connections to the city centre: look out for the 99 or 98 routes. High speed trains take you in and around France with routes from main cities such as Paris through companies including TGV. Ferries are also available from Nice, taking you to destinations such as Italy and Algeria. By car follow the A8 main road. While staying in Nice use buses, bikes, taxis as well as many places in walking in distance.
Gastronomy
Mediterranean influences dominate the cuisine of Nice. Local specialities include fresh fish owing to its port location. And these influences explain its local well-known dish Salade Nicoise, comprising of tuna, eggs, anchovies and olives. Not forgetting a French staple, Crepes are widely served especially on the Promenade des Anglais.
Events
A varied mix of old and new culture, Nice has plenty to experience all year round. The summer Jazz Festival lasting approximately a week celebrates old and new styles of jazz as well as filling the city with a party vibe. Notable past performers have included Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. And in February the Nice Carnival is a two week party to remember packed with over a thousand musicians and events day and night. Watch out for the floats manned by brightly coloured characters distributing flowers to the crowds.
