Orange Vélodrome

Enjoy a stay at the Kyriad Marseille Convention Center so you can attend an Olympique de Marseille (OM) football match at the Vélodrome! The second largest stadium in France after the Stade de France, the Vélodrome, renamed the Orange Vélodrome since 2016 by naming contract, welcomes not only OM matches, but also international rugby matches and large-scale concerts such as the Rolling Stones concert in 2018. Its inauguration took place on the occasion of the Football World Cup in 1938. But its name comes from another discipline because until the 1980s, it was a track dedicated to cycling competitions around the playing surface. With an initial capacity of 35,000 seats, the stadium has undergone several extensions. Prior to the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the venue had grown to 60,000 open places, and by the time of the 2016 European Football Championship, the capacity was further increased by 7,000 seats. Nowadays, the stadium is partly covered. Even if you are not a football fan, attending an OM match at the Velodrome is a great experience!

Parc du Palais Longchamp

Are you visiting the Kyriad Marseille Blancarde Timone? Do you want to relax in nature while staying in the city center of Marseille? Head to parc Longchamp. Located in the heart of the city, this 12 hectare park is a haven of peace, with its majestic fountain. Every year, in July, it hosts the five continent Marseille Jazz festival. If you are in the city at this time, do not miss it: the biggest names of jazz live side by side in a relaxed atmosphere. The palais Longchamp, the masterpiece of the architect Henri Espérandieu and home to two museums: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History. Leaving the park by the main gate, take Longchamp Boulevard, a long semi-pedestrian street lined with plane trees, which is a pleasant walk to the Réformés district at the top of the Canebière. At the end of the boulevard, Les Danaïdes, a true Marseille institution, welcome you on a large terrace under the plane trees, with a view of the fountain of the same name. This large Parisian brasserie is also pleasant in winter, with its red benches and zinc counter.

Parc national des Calanques

Are you dying to see the Parc national des Calanques, but do not have time to plan a hike? From your Kyriad Marseille Palais des Congrès, head to the Old Port, then embark on a speedboat to discover this exceptional site by the sea. Depending on the time you have, you can choose between two tours - the Essential or the Integrality - with a duration of 2hrs and 3.5 hrs respectively. Before embarking, make sure you are well equipped (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, water bottle) and plan what supplies to take during the cruise. Once on the boat, sit on the port side to make the most of the view of the coast. Admire the mouth of the port, the Corniche and the Frioul Islands, the Prado, the Red Point and finally, Les Goudes, the last village of Marseille which is the gateway to the calanque. These are spread over about twenty kilometers between the village of La Madrague and Cassis. They are an integral part of the city of Marseille. You will then pass the calanque of Callelongue, then the Marseilleveyre, before entering the Sormiou cove, one of the most beautiful of the massif. The cruise continues in the coves of Morgiou, Sugiton, En-Vau, Port-Pin and Port-Miou, located in the town of Cassis.

A weekend in Marseille is the perfect opportunity for a decadent gourmet stopover. The first day, stroll through the Phoenician city. Start by visiting Old Port, la Canebière, and Notre Dame de la Garde. Try a bouillabaisse at one of the Old Port restaurants. The second day, embark in pursuit of one of the great wonders of the nature: Les Calanques. You can hike, climb, dive, bask on a beach and swim in the blue waters of the Mediterranean.

During your visit to Marseille, stroll downtown, explore Old Port and La Canebière, then admire the Church of Notre-Dame de la Garde. Head to the city hall and explore the historic district of Panier. A trip to Marseille should include a visit to the unmissable Château d'If. Consider visiting Fort Saint-Jean and its Museum of Civilizations, and then catch a game at the Vélodrome stadium. With a full week in Marseille, you'll be able to enjoy the city but also its nearby area. Find our Kyriad hotels in Gémenos for an even deeper exploration of the regional wonders.

Don’t hesitate to bring the whole family to Marseille, as the city has earned the “Family Plus” label, meaning it also caters to its young visitors, with dedicated entertainment and infrastructure: beaches, playgrounds, scavenger hunts, themed tours… If you head a bit outside the commune, a hike through Les Calanques and a dip in the water should also satisfy both kids and grown-ups: Children can’t get enough of the outdoors. Don’t forget to enjoy local cuisine and culinary specialties like a family dinner around a bouillabaisse at the restaurant of your 3-star Kyriad hotel.

Marseille’s location also gives you the opportunity to enjoy Provençal cuisine: ratatouille, soupe au pistou and other dishes seasoned with olive oil or aioli. Wash it all down with a lovely Côte-de-Provence rosé. Back at your Marseille hotel, you'll find the Kyriad restaurant, which offers a refined menu and warm atmosphere, before returning to your room uniquely designed room.

Top 3 unmissable events

Spending a weekend or longer in Marseille gives you the opportunity to enjoy a diverse cultural agenda and plenty of festivities. An event of particular significance: the Santons Christmas Market. This is held annually and showcases typical Provençal craftsmanship. The traditional santons, figurines that adorn nativity scenes, are actually originally from Marseille. Plan a visit to the Christmas market to better understand how these small clay figurines are made, meet local artisans, and expand your collection of typical or unusual pieces.

Did you know?

Why do we call Marseille the Phoenician City? The answer lies in a love story. In the 6th century B.C., Protis, a sailor from the Greek city of Phoenicia seduced the Princess Gyptis. For their wedding, the two lovers received the region of Marseille as a gift. At the time, Marseille, then called Massalia was an outpost established by the Greeks, and had become quite powerful. During your trip to Marseille, don’s miss the Museum of History and the Jardin des Vestiges de Marseille and discover some marvelous relics of the past.
