What to do in Sète

In 2 days
In 1 week
As a family
During a short stay in Sète, start your weekend with a stroll along the canals to admire the consular palace and typical colorful facades. Close to your Kyriad hotel, the Saint-Louis breakwater will take you to the lighthouse. The old port and the Pointe Courte, the fishermen's district, will give you another facet of the harbor city. Take advantage of your stay to discover Thau pond, separated from the sea by a thin stretch of sand, the lido. Then make the climb to the Théâtre de la Mer and the upper part of Sète, all the way to Saint-Clair peak. Then round off your trip with some well-deserved sunbathing on the beach!

Do you have the pleasure of spending an entire week in Sète? Get carried away on a tour of discovery of the Sète harbor and the depths of the seas by boat, ideally with an open-sea fishing excursion. To explore the surrounding region, visit Marseillan or Vic la Gardiole, unless you want to extend your journey to our Kyriad hotel in Balaruc-les-Bains. Don’t miss the Gallo-Roman villa Prés Bas, near Loupian. In between culinary tastings at the many gourmet hotspots of the region, you can take a moment to admire the Gard Bridge or the city of Carcassonne.

With its Family Plus label, Sète guarantees plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy together, including shows catering to a young audience. The Fantasy Park is an all-time favorite among children with fun rides on the Corniche Beach: slides, inflatable playgrounds, trampolines, and more! On a walk through the city, you’ll stumble upon various rides and playgrounds. The most athletic members of the family can sign up for a sailing course, tour the region by bike, splash around in the sea or enjoy beach games. Once back at the hotel, they'll enjoy the Mediterranean cuisine served in our Kyriad restaurants.

A Mediterranean and foodie stay in Sète

The cuisine of Sète is the product of both Italian influences and local seafood. On the menu at your Kyriad restaurants, you'll find a variety of fish, as well as mussels and oysters cultivated in Thau pond. Don’t hesitate to sample the culinary specialties of the Mediterranean, such as bourride de baudroie, a fish stew, bouillabaisse, stuffed mussels à la sétoise. Tielle is an octopus pie, then there’s macaronade, macaroni stuffed with meat. For a true gourmet experience, don't forget to test zézette cookies or pastissou, a cake made with anise and olives!

An interesting story about Sète

The etymology of the city’s name remains a mystery to this day. Only thing’s for sure, Sète was also spelled as Cette or even Sette, and the definitive adoption of the current spelling only dates back to 1927! According to some, the name comes from the Latin “cetus”, which means “whale”. And the whale in question does not come from the sea, but rather from the shape of Mount Saint-Clair: observed from the area surrounding the city, it looks like a whale overlooking the sea. According to others, the name Sète actually comes from the Occitan “seta”, derived from the Indo-European “set”, which means mountain.
