The Camargue is a rural coastline region on the south east coast of France. It is located to the south of Arles and between the two arms of the Rhone delta. The eastern arm of the delta is called the Grande Rhone while the western arm is called the Petite Rhone. Administratively the area lies within the department of Bouches-du-Rhone, or Mouth of the Rhone, and includes Arles, the largest commune in Metropolitan France, Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, the second biggest commune, and Port Saint-Louis-du-Rhone.

The area is made up of reed-covered marshland and brine lagoons, known as etangs. These lagoons are cut off from the sea by sand bars. At 930 km squared, the Camargue is western Europe’s second biggest river delta. The area is home to hundreds of species of birds. Perhaps most famously, the marshes are home to the Greater Flamingo. The Camargue is also famous for Camargue Bull and the Camargue Horse.

Two-day break:

With the area designated as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ since 1986 and the coast of the Etang de Vaccares protected as a regional park since 1927, the Camargue is the perfect place to spot wildlife and enjoy some spectacular scenery. Visit the Caramague’s national park and catch the area’s famous flamingos and striking white horses to which the area lends its name. The Camargue is also the ideal spot for bird watching enthusiasts with hundreds of species of birds making their homes in the area.

Seven-day break:

With a longer break why not explore the Camargue’s largest city, Arles and stay at the Kyriad Hotel Arles. Visit the town’s amphitheatre and soak up some of the area’s history from the Roman era building. On some days there are gladiator shows to absorb you even further into the area’s past. On Friday evenings there are bull races.

Family Holiday

The Camargue makes for a great family holiday. Staying at the Kyriad Hotel Arles you are perfectly positioned to enjoy the exciting history of the city with its amphitheatre which features bull racing and gladiator shows, while at the same time be able to take thrilling day trips into the area’s countryside to spot wild horses and flamingos. Between the two your family will be ideally provided for.

The best way to see the breathtaking landscape of the Camargue is by car, which will allow you to travel at your own leisure and give you the chance to stop and enjoy any wild life you might spot. Arles itself is small enough to explore by foot or, perhaps more ideally, by bike.

The Camargue has a number of traditional dishes for visitors to sample, including Bouillabaisse, Salade Camarguaise and Moules en Brasucado. In tourist towns, such as Saintes-Maire-de-la-Mer, it can be difficult to find a good restaurant that sells food beyond chips and mixed grills. But if you drive out of the towns slightly you’ll find great local cuisine.

There are a number of events at the Arles Amphitheatre that take place throughout the year. In the summer the historic building plays host to concerts and plays, but other events include chariot racing, gladiator shows, bull racing and bull fighting. This is a great venue for any event and is a popular attraction.

Did You Know ?

The Camargue Horse is an ancient breed of horse that has been native to the area for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. They live semi-feral conditions in the Camargue’s wilderness, giving them the hardiness, agility and stamina for which they are known. They are the traditional mount of the gardians, Camargue cowboys who heard the area’s black bulls.
