Mont Blanc, which means White Mountain, is the highest peak in the Alps mountain range and the highest in the European Union. It is ranked 11th in the world in terms of topographical prominence. It is also known as La Dame Blanche, French for The White Lady, and Il Bianco, Italian for The White One. The mountain lies in a range called the Graian Alps and is popular for mountaineering, skiing and hiking.

The first recorded ascent of Mont Blanc took place in August 1786. This climb is thought to mark the start of modern mountaineering. The summit is now ascended by an average of 20,000 mountaineer-tourists each year. Although it is quite a long climb, Mont Blanc is arguably a relatively easy climb for someone with mountaineering knowledge. Three towns surround the peak, Chamonix and St Gervais les Bains in France, and Courmayeur in Italy.

A two-day break

A number of activities are available to choose from around Mont Blanc and in nearby towns. Spend some time on the mountain slopes with a wide choice of ski resorts in the area and five resorts in the Chamonix Valley alone - Le Brévent, La Flégère, Grands Montets, Le Tour, and Les Houches. You might also want to see some of the scenery with a hike in the area as the Chamonix Valley offers some amazing views.

A seven-day break

Many people visit Mont Blanc with the express intention of climbing all or part of the mountain. There are five classic routes by which to climb Mont Blanc, the most popular being Voie Des Cristalliers, also known as the Voie Royale. This route begins at the town of Saint-Gervais les Bains and takes two days to complete. For people who aren’t already experienced and confident climbers there are climbing instructors available in Chamonix.

Family Holiday

While skiing can be a fun family activity, with options for all ages and skills, mountaineering might not be so appropriate. Why not try snowshoeing instead ? Snowshoeing can be done to a variety of degrees, from a casual stroll above the tree line to look at the plants and animals or a challenging trek into the high mountains. Snowshoeing is a sport that is great for people of all age, from children to the elderly.

The Kyriad Hotel Annecy Centre is about an hour's drive from the town of Chamonix. SAT run a bus service that connects with Geneva airport and there are a number of coach and bus companies operating in the area. There are also taxis to help you get around.

Surrounded by snow and mountains you’ll want hearty food to keep you warm. The La Caleche restaurant in Chamonix will give you the chance to sample some traditional food. These include fondue and raclette cheese dishes which can also be found in Switzerland. Bar du Plan de l'Aiguille offers some stunning views that you are not likely to find anywhere else.

In August Chamonix hosts the Adventure Film Festival. The festival brings together explorers and adventures to tell their stories though film and photography. This is not another spectator festival, with attendants being invited to get involved with photography and film making courses. The event is a week long and is a great chance to hear some of the most exciting stories around.

Did You Know ?

In 1886 the future President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, led an expedition to the summit of Mont Blanc. In 2003 seven French paraglide pilots managed to land on top of Mont Blanc. This was thanks to the hot weather at the time which provided hot air currents to lift them high enough.
